Peter Berry initially trained as a sculptor at Cheltenham School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in the 1960s. After an extended period of lecturing in Art & Design at Colleges and Universities, Peter continues to develop his studio practice full time.
The studio/workshop is in a light industrial building in the East Midlands where other manufacturing takes place and some of the processes are utilised in the making of current work. The relationship between fine art and industrial process has been an enduring fascination and has been explored and celebrated from an early stage, for example in the work Yellow and White Squares 1967, (reconstructed and exhibited Ikon Gallery, Birmingham 2004), a series of 4ft. square frames which had a machine-like finish.
In reflecting upon the current work, the artist says “the travels and experiences over the past few years since retiring from teaching have both prepared the ground for a stronger studio practice and added to the development and overall aesthetic concerns which were established in the earlier work.”
